DUCSHOP 955

Atlanta lawyer, John D'Orazio has received a lot of publicity for his hopped up Monster. It has featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution and the Robb Report and has been submitted as an entry to the Ducati Monster Competition.

And so it should.

"Initially, I found the bike to have plenty of power," says D'Orazio. "In the comfort department, the only complaint was with the stock saddle. A pair of low mount slip on mufflers was the only performance modification I felt necessary.

"After riding the bike for several months, I began to realize that in producing the S4, Ducati had somewhat "neutered" the performance of the legendary 916 v-twin powering the bike. This made no sense to me as the chassis and its components were clearly up to handling additional power. I researched the availability of performance upgrades online and decided to purchase a 955 big bore kit. I was assured by the vendor that this was a simple "bolt on" kit requiring no other modification. The kit included Ducati Corse 955 cylinders and J.E. high compression, forged pistons. Unfortunately, in spite of what the vendor said, the kit did not bolt on, instead requiring "splitting" and machining the engine cases. Nothing was going on with the kit as my dealer was hesitant to take on an engine build of this type. The project ground to a halt.

"This is where Ducshop entered the picture. Mark took over the project and disassembled the engine. The cases were sent out for machining and the cylinders were sent to Millers for powder coating. As the cases were apart, Mark blueprinted the engine on assembly. The stock cams were pretty mild, so to take advantage of the extra displacement and compression, a set of V2 cams were added. The cams were "degreed" upon installation to maximize performance. A polished Sil Motor full exhaust system with carbon end cans assists in the exit of spent gasses, while a Ducati Performance air box increases breathing on the intake side. A Dyno Jet Power Commander runs the fuel injection system with a custom map developed on the Ducshop's in house dynomometer.

"These modifications assured good street performance while retaining "rideability", but some changes were needed in the appearance department. The wheels were sent to Millers for a coat of red powder to match the cylinders. Carbon fiber accessories include the dash, air scoops, belly pan and side covers along with clutch and primary sprocket covers. To make the ride more comfy, a Sargent saddle was installed along with Cycle Cat upper triple tree, handle bars and risers as well as rear set foot controls. A silver racing stripe with "ghost flames" was added by Moon River Customs to add a little distinction. Getting the power that Mark and Loren built into the motor to the ground is handled by a set of Pirelli Diablo Corsa tires.

"So, what's it like to ride? The Cycle Cat bars and pegs along with the Sargent saddle assure a perfect fit and all day comfort. The motor is a real peach, providing a super mid range power band. No waiting for the bike to "spool up", it just goes. Throttle response is immediate, acceleration is strong. That being said, it has utterly predictable and friendly power delivery, never overtaxing the tires or chassis.

"Lessons learned, don't waste time fooling around online trying to make performance decisions about something as personal as your bike, take it to a true performance specialist right from the start. The results are well worth it! The whole crew at the Ducshop worked hard to provide me with a performance package custom tailored to my needs. I would do it again in a flash".

We couldn't have written it better ourselves.
