TOURING SPORT DUCATI NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, AGAIN

Touring Sport Ducati took their second consecutive SunTrust MOTO-ST GST National Championship win last weekend and came runner-up in the SST National Championship at Daytona Motor Speedway after eight tumultuous hours.
The team started the GST race on their PS1000LE with a two point lead over the factory Buell team. Six laps in Pete Friedland crashed after being hit by another rider, leaving his bike too damaged to ride back to the pits. After a lengthy wait for the crash truck, the team went to work to repair the bike and return to the race.
Five laps into their second stint, rider two, Brad Phillips, also crashed – this time with no help from anyone. Ironically in the four seasons the team had been racing together they had never crashed in a race - until now.
Emotionally charged the team stripped their back-up bike and were able to return to the race; one rider short* and in almost last position.
Frank Shockley, with his “never-say-die” attitude, proceeded to do double stints, running at competitive times despite the fact that a race or championship win looked futile. Then the Buell crashed. It returned to the race one position in front of the Ducati which would still have given TSD the championship but with an hour left in the race the Buell developed an oil leak and retired from the race.
The SST race was also an ordeal. The team, made up of Doug Polen, Ryan Elleby and Ryan Gordon, started the endurance race with a 16 point handicap over the factory Aprilia after the being robbed of their previous race points due to a wheel mix up. Elleby started the eight hours, quickly taking the lead and setting the fastest lap time in his 17 lap stint. But when Gordon took over for the second stint the 848 developed a (still undiagnosed) electrical problem. The three riders rode as hard as they could but only manage a fifth place finish placing them second in the championship.
Ducshop proudly builds and maintains the engines of both the 848 and PS1000. The team is also sponsored by Touring Sport Ducati, Ohlins USA, HPE Exhaust, Speedy Moto, Robby Byrd, AGIP Oil, Swat Motorcycle, JEV Limited and Brad Haynes. The team would like to thank all their riders and crew for their tireless effort throughout the season.
* Brad Phillips was taken to hospital with a crushed ring finger, which was saved bar the fingernail.
